What is the Future City Competition?

40,000 students around the world in grades 6, 7, and 8 work in teams with a STEM mentor and educator to imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Along the way, they learn about engineering and city planning, develop writing and public speaking skills, and apply math and science to real world issues.

During the competition, student teams:

  1. Learn city design and management using SimCity software.
  2. Write an essay about their city’s attributes and solution to the annual challenge.
  3. Complete a project plan to help them organize their project.
  4. Build a model of their city using recycled materials and featuring a moving part.
  5. Present their city to a panel of judges.

We Need Judges for the 2019 Finals!

We’ll provide assessment tools (called rubrics) and electronic score sheets.

City Models and Team Presentations (Monday, February 18, 2019 from 7:30am to 2:00pm)

Here’s your chance to see tomorrow’s leaders in action! In this role, you and your fellow judges will see five or six teams present their city’s unique features, learn how they came up with their ideas, and have a chance to ask questions. Judging will be held at the Hyatt Regency Washington (400 New Jersey Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001) on Monday, February 18, 2019 from 7:30am-2:00pm.

Mission Statement

The Future City Competition program, part of the National Engineers Week Foundation, partners engineers with 7th and 8th grade students to solve a stimulating engineering challenge with a hands-on application which presents their vision of a city of the future. The Future City Competition program is aligned with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiatives and employs an integrated curriculum approach. While providing students with real-world engineering applications and integration of technology, the multi-disciplinary program also enhances the development of life skills, such as problem-based learning and team building, both of which are critical skills needed in today's work force. Currently, competitions are held in 40 regions around the country with one winner from each region participating in the national competition finals in Washington, DC each February. The program now includes over 30,000 students and 7,500 volunteers from across the United States.
