The affairs and business of the Southwest Side Seniors Service Organization shall be managed by its Executive Board, composed of not less than nine (9) officers who shall be elected by the seniors' popular vote. A qualified candidate for the Executive Board shall be a person o 60 years of age or older who is willing to assist in various activities at the center. The term of office for each member of shall be one (1) year, January 1st through December 31st. As long as a candidate is a qualified candidate, runs for office and is elected, the number of terms in office is unlimited. The Board shall have the control and general management of the affairs and business of the Organization and the Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center. Such Executive Board shall in all cases act as the Governing Board, regularly convened by a majority, adopt such rules and regulations for the conduct of their meetings and the management of the Organization and the Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center as they deem proper, consistent with the by-laws and the laws of the State of Illinois. Present openings on the Board include two Trustee spots, President, Vice President and Treasurer. The Board meets once per month and holds a fundraising activity once per month. Board members also provide support during regular business hours as necessary. Regular business hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

To assist and encourage older persons to be active and effective citizens and participants in the economic, social, cultural and political life of their community and nation. To promote and encourage the participation of senior citizens in the Southwest Side Seniors Service Organization, the Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center and associations throughout the City of Chicago. To support and advocate a variety of policies, laws, and programs that promote the general welfare and the interest of senior citizens. To operate the Southwest Side Seniors Service Organization, the Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center and fulfill the duties and responsibilities set forth in any agreements concerning operations of the center.

Description

The Southwest Side Seniors Service Organization is the operator of the Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center in partnership with the City of Chicago Department of Family and Support Services. The organization was incorporated on June 6, 1994. The organization opened the doors of their original senior center under the organization's name in May of 1996. In May of 2008, the senior center was moved to its present location. The senior center provides health and wellness, educational, social and recreational programs to seniors aged 60+ and the "Baby Boomers Club", those aged 55-59. The Golden Diners hot lunch program is also available.
