Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s mission is to improve the physical, social, emotional and economic well-being of elder adults in Southern Maine.
The Phone Pal Volunteer will provide homebound elders & individuals with disabilities with companionship by regularly calling on the phone in an effort to decrease feelings of social isolation and loneliness. Volunteers will communicate concerns to the Phone Pal Coordinator as needed and follow protocol if recipient does not answer phone at the scheduled time.
Volunteers must have the ability to develop a sense of trust and rapport; sensitivity toward older adults and persons with disabilities and/or dementia; ability to demonstrate active listening skills; have access to reliable phone service.
Where will the volunteer(s) work?: From their home in Cumberland/York county.
When will the volunteer(s) work?: Phone calls will occur 1 - 3 days a week - schedule dependent on volunteer and recipient.
Length of commitment: At least one year.
Assignment: Volunteers can begin right away after they attend a training. Volunteers can sign up directly by contacting SMAA Volunteer Services at volunteer@smaaa.org or 207-396-6525.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY!
Southern Maine Agency on Aging Volunteer Services provides opportunities to make a difference in the community through volunteer service. Volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, meals on wheels, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. We offer maximum flexibility and choice to our volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of the over age 55 volunteer to opportunities in selected imapct service areas to help solve community problems. RSVP volunteers receive supplemental insurance while on duty, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where they are placed.
