Organization's mission: The Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s mission is to improve the quality of life for older adults, adults with disabilities and the people who care for them.

What specific tasks will the volunteer(s) perform: The Phone Pal Volunteer will provide homebound elders & individuals with disabilities with companionship by regularly calling on the phone in an effort to decrease feelings of isolation and loneliness. Volunteers will communicate concerns to the MOW site coordinator as needed and follow protocol if recipient does not answer phone at the scheduled time.

Qualities, experience & skills needed by the volunteers: Ability to develop a sense of trust and rapport; sensitivity toward older adults and persons with disabilities and/or dementia; ability to demonstrate active listening skills; have access to reliable phone service.

Where will the volunteer(s) work: From their home in Cumberland or York county; MOW site dependent.

When will the volunteer(s) work: Phone calls will occur 1 - 3 days a week; schedule dependent on volunteer and recipient. Conversations should not last longer than 30 minutes.

What length of commitment is expected of the volunteer(s): At least 6 months.

When and where will volunteer training/orientation take place? Training will be provided virtually by the Phone Pal Leadership team prior to getting matched with a Meals on Wheels client. These trainings will be recorded for volunteers to review if needed.

Who will be responsible for volunteer timesheets? The volunteer is expected to log their own hours online or submit timesheet.

Who will supervise the volunteer(s)? Collaborative supervisory approach involving Volunteer Services staff, Phone Pal Project Managers, and Phone Pal Site Coordinators.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY!

Southern Maine Agency on Aging Volunteer Services provides opportunities to make a difference in the community through volunteer service. Volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, meals on wheels, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. We offer maximum flexibility and choice to our volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of the over age 55 volunteer to opportunities in selected imapct service areas to help solve community problems. RSVP volunteers receive supplemental insurance while on duty, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where they are placed.
