ORGANIZATION: Alexandria Mentoring Partnership

  • 1 person is interested

If you're looking for a volunteer opportunity in the Alexandria area, look no further! Casa Chirilagua's Mentoring Program has an emphasis on impacting the community through building relationships in the Arlandria neighborhood- also known as Chirilagua.

Our goal for our mentoring program is for TWO lives to transform through ONE mentorship. Our mentors provide our youth with a stable adult relationship that gives them access to opportunities and experiences that help them reach their full potential. This mentorship is a combination of academic support with emotional development. Every mentorship is different because every student and mentor is different, so we don't have a standard curriculum.

Our mentors commit to one year (preferably more) to a student who is in one of our programs. It's a 1-on-1 mentorship and is community based (you meet in the student's home, public space, parks, etc.) and you meet for a minimum of 1 hour per week (year round). We only serve youth who are in our Casa Chirilagua programs and live in our neighborhood- Chirilagua.

If you're interested, please email Jose Martinez, our Mentoring Director, at jose@casachirilagua.org

Mission Statement

To ensure that quality mentors and mentor programs are available for Alexandria's youth and young adults in need by maximizing mentor recruitment, screening, and training AMP strives to provide every child and young adult in need in Alexandria with a quality mentoring relationship.

Description

In the fall of 2006, city staff, mentor program representatives, and community volunteers came together to form the Alexandria Mentoring Partnership (AMP).

AMP is dedicated to strategically expanding quality youth mentoring in Alexandria, Virginia. Operated through the Alexandria juvenile courts, the AMP acts as an umbrella organization for mentoring programs throughout the city. The AMP acts as a clearinghouse for mentor and mentee referrals. Additionally, the AMP provides our partner programs with opportunities to collaborate and share best practices on mentor recruitment, training, and support through networking and advocacy.

Our mentoring programs vary in structure and mission, though the standard minimum requirements for mentors include an application, criminal background check, and the ability to commit for at least one hour, once a week, for one year.
