Mission Statement
We are a museum of ideas. While building upon our founding collections and values, we cultivate meaningful art and societal experiences, and foster new knowledge in the visual arts by encouraging interdisciplinary investigation. The Museum serves as a cultural and educational resource for everyone.
Description
Founded in 1931, the Museum is the only art museum in Nevada and is accredited by the American Association of Museums. The Museum moved into its current facility, the award-winning Will Bruder designed Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E.L. Wiegand Gallery in 2003.
The Collection: The Museum has a permanent collection of over 1,500 artworks, organized into five focus areas - The Altered Landscape, Contemporary Collection, Sierra Nevada and Great Basin Collection, Historical Collection and the E.L. Wiegand Collection- all of which deal with interactions between humans and their natural, built and virtual environments.
Exhibitions: The Museum presents approximately 35 - 40 exhibitions annually, providing a rich breadth of offerings from world renowned artists to introductory exhibitions of emerging artists from Nevada.
Education Programs: The Museum plays an essential role in arts education, particularly as Nevada’s K-12 education system provides little to no academic training in the arts. The Museum is devoted to helping Nevada’s youth learn about art, providing a range of programs, such as docent-led school tours which serve over 7,000 students annually and the free high school admission program for all Washoe County students. The Fairweather Foundation recently extended this program to students of Douglas County through a generous grant of $30,000.
The Museum established a research institute, the Center for Art + Environment (CA+E) in January 2009. The mission of the CA+E is to be a global leader in supporting the practice, study, and awareness of creative interactions between people and their environments.
