The Ellen Kayrod Gallery was opened in 1994 to show the work of older adult artists in Michigan and highlight those who are emerging artists. Today, the gallery continues that mission as well as hosts limited intergenerational shows to connect people across age. Finally, the gallery offers professional development opportunities for artists.

The Ellen Kayrod Art Gallery accomplishes as much as it does thanks to the assistance of volunteers and interns. Our internship program is a great opportunity for an emerging curator. It’s available to college/master’s students, recent graduates, and people over 60 who may or may not have ever attended school. This is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world work experience in an art gallery environment as well as engage in intergenerational learning.

  • Weekly gatherings and discussions with interns and staff
  • Collaborate to develop complementary cultural and educational programming for gallery shows
  • Conduct research and development of exhibits
  • Writes interpretive texts for exhibitions and projects
  • Research and maintain the catalogue of Hannan artists
  • Conduct private tours of temporary exhibitions and collection
  • Work with the Photography/Video Production intern to plan and execute professional artist interviews
  • Research and suggest new artists and exhibition ideas
  • Assist in the coordination of special events, such as opening receptions and public programs
  • Collaborate with the development intern on grant writing and securing sponsorships
  • Assist in finding and booking performers for multi-disciplinary events (musicians, poets, dancers, actors, comedians, etc.)
  • Promote the gallery’s facilities rental program
  • 2018-2019 Special Project: Emerge! Arts Festival-an arts festival to highlight the work of emerging older adult artists
