The Jamestown Rediscovery Volunteer Program was created in 1995 to help provide on-site interpretation to the visitors at the archaeological site. For twenty years, our volunteers have played an invaluable role as members of the Jamestown Rediscovery team, enriching the experiences of visitors and staff, and helping to fulfill our missions of research and education!

Today, a variety of Volunteer positions with Jamestown Rediscovery include:

  • Visitor Center Greeters: Experience the excitement as guests arrive to Historic Jamestowne for their first visit, or, welcome familiar faces as they return to see our newest discoveries. Our volunteers share their knowledge of Jamestown and the surrounding area to provide an unforgettable guest experience.

  • Fort Site Interpreters: Preservation Virginia launched the Jamestown Rediscovery Project to locate the once thought lost fort, James Fort. For the past 20 years archaeologists have continued to uncover the history of Jamestown, with several of their discoveries being among Archaeology Magazine’s top 10 finds in the World. Today, volunteers share in the moment of discovery with guests as archaeologists excavate the 1607 Fort site.
  • Docents in our Archaeological museum, the Archaearium: Objects belonging to Jamestown colonists 400 years ago, unearthed from the James Fort site, are presented to the public in the Nathalie P. and Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium. This facility showcases the findings of world renowned archaeological discoveries at the birthplace of America. Volunteers share the unique stories and history behind these artifacts with guests visiting this one of a kind museum.

  • Development team volunteers: dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers assist the Development team with general office responsibilities on a regular basis. These include data entry, preparing large-quantity mailings, office filing, making "thank you" phone calls on behalf of Historic Jamestown, and assisting with Jamestown special events. Some tasks are ongoing, which can be done independently, while others may require several volunteers for a specific event or project.
  • Volunteers with other availability, skills, training and interests also pitch in with special events and projects at Jamestown, some on an on-call basis. The regional community is filled with talented individuals who enrich our team!

About Historic Jamestowne - Preservation Virginia/Jamestown Rediscovery

Location:

1368 Colonial Parkway, Jamestown, VA 23081, US

Mission Statement

The mission of Historic Jamestowne is to preserve, protect and promote the original site of the first permanent English settlement in North America and to tell the story of the role of the three cultures, European, North American and African, that came together to lay the foundation for a uniquely American form of democratic government, language, free enterprise and society.

Description

Historic Jamestowne is owned and managed through a private/public partnership. The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (Preservation Virginia) acquired 22.5 acres in 1893. The National Park Service acquired the remaining 1500 acres in 1934. During the early decades, the activity on the Island could be characterized as quiet but cooperative in welcoming visitors, providing research and interpretation. Jamestown Rediscovery is committed to supporting preservation, education, and the archaeological investigation of Historic Jamestowne, the original site of the first permanent English settlement in America.

In the early 1990's, the 60-year old partnership took a quantum leap. In anticipation of the 400th anniversary of the landing at Jamestown, the NPS and Preservation Virginia launched extensive archaeological assessment and research--all to address the under-explored 17th century, our nation's origin. NPS conducted an assessment of its massive collections from the region and Preservation Virginia initiated its Jamestown Rediscovery project to search for the original 1607 fort, long thought lost to the James River. Interest in the research has resulted in international attention from scholars, historians, and the general public.

Today Historic Jamestowne is jointly administered by the National Park Service and The Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation (on behalf of Preservation Virginia) and preserves the original site of the first permanent English settlement in the New World.
