SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

We are seeking Exhibition Interpreters for an exciting initiative between Queens Library and Queens Museum.

Exhibition Interpreters are trained to serve as guides to art/exhibitions located within Queens Library branches. The purpose of a guide is to help give visitors a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artwork.

Tours are conducted every 30-60 minutes and structured to actively involve visitors in the experience, giving them the tools of visual literacy. Interpreters help the visitor attain some sort of "ownership" of the art, and enable them to include art in their own lives.

Specific Interpreter Duties:

  • Develop visual literacy skills

  • Provide a general art history background of Modern and Contemporary art

  • Provide an exhibition overview, and an in-depth understanding of the installation at the assigned library, and its response to the particular library site

  • Develop audience sensitivity

The program runs from November 10th through February 23rd. Weekly shifts are scheduled (choose at least one shift):

  • Thursdays 3:00pm - 7:00pm

  • Saturdays 12:00pm - 4:00pm

Training is required for all volunteers. You must attend BOTH sessions:

  • Saturday, November 3rd from 11:00am - 5:00pm at Queens Museum

  • Monday, November 5th from 6:00pm - 8:30pm at Lefrak City Library
