We are looking for people who are willing to organize periodic social gatherings for AFS students hosted in central Illinois! We would also love volunteers willing to help organize and implement orientations for these high-school aged students.

Our students love getting together, but they need volunteer help to come up with activities to do, and sometimes help with transportation to and from the events! We would ask you to coordinate with other local and team volunteers to make a plan that fits into the team calendar. If you are a person who loves coordinating outings or would like an excuse to visit some of our interesting nearby fun spots, this is the role for you! Our total group size in this area is usually between 10-30 people, so there are many possible fun activities you could plan.

You will have team support as you create your event, and training as needed.

What's Involved
  • Set goals and objectives for your AFS community
  • Work within a budget
  • Coordinate group communications
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities
  • Promote events through publicity and outreach efforts
  • Welcome event participants
  • Evaluate the success of events

Mission Statement

AFS-USA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, works to build a more just and peaceful world through international education and exchange. We provide life-changing intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global network of independent, nonprofit AFS organizations, each with a professionally staffed office and a team of dedicated volunteers.

Description

AFS-USA Greater Illinois Area Team is a team of dedicated volunteers, host families, and people who have been AFS students themselves who support AFS exchange students in Northern Illinois and Central Illinois. Our team area includes the towns of Rockford, Galena, Harvard, Woodstock, Aurora, DeKalb, Peoria, the Quad Cities, Bloomington Normal, Champaign Urbana, and Springfield. We have many other towns and volunteers across northern and central Illinois.

AFS-USA honors the legacy of its founders-volunteer WWI and WWII American Field Service ambulance drivers-who emerged from the wars with a bold mission: to help prevent future conflict through educational and cross-cultural exchanges.

More than 70 years later, the AFS Mission continues to respond to the needs of an increasingly complex world, offering programs abroad in more than 50 countries and hosting international students from more than 80 countries. True to the spirit of our founders, these life-changing intercultural learning programs are made possible by the dedicated work of AFS Volunteers-more than 4,000 in the U.S. and over 50,000 worldwide.
