ORGANIZATION: ONE COOL EARTH

Covid 19 Update:
The Garden Educator Assistant will work with students and assist a One Cool Earth’s Garden Educator Manager (GEM) with preparing and teaching lessons in school gardens. The position would be well-suited for someone who enjoys working with children and has a background knowledge or strong interest in gardening, education, nutrition, biology, and/or natural resource management.

Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Supporting the garden educator to improve student science understanding by providing engaging, standards-based projects, experiments, and lessons based on ecology, earth, and life sciences, especially on the subjects of watersheds, food forests, and zero waste;
  • Support the educator to teach engaging garden classes (30 - 60 min.) to 25 students at a time (3 classes per day);
  • Support a campus Green Team that manages school composting and recycling;
  • Provide basic maintenance for gardens: planting, weeding, pruning, composting, minor irrigation adjustments and repairs;
  • Preparing supplies for lessons

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commitment to One Cool Earth’s vision and mission;
  • Experience working with children
  • Demonstrated communications and interpersonal skills, able to work with people of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds;
  • Creative, flexible and hard working; able to manage your commitments responsibly;
  • Enjoy learning new things and challenging yourself;
  • A good sense of humor, wonder, and curiosity;

Our goal is to support thriving school garden programs at all 43 elementary schools in San Luis Obispo County by 2020.
