Position Title: Food Shelf Shopping Escort
Program Overview
The Blaine County Food Shelf serves families and individuals in Anoka County, and seeks to supplement the nutritional needs of low income individuals of all ages.
Description of Position
A volunteer is needed to help The Salvation Army provide well-balanced food to families seeking assistance from our area food shelves.
Specific Duties
- Escorting clients through the food shelf as they shop for food items.
- Monitoring clients’ choices to ensure they are within allowable limits.
- Assisting with weighing and bagging food.
- Answer clients’ questions regarding food items and assisting them with making selections if needed.
- Make sure shelves are neat and orderly during down time.
- Light cleaning as needed.
Qualifications Sought
- Comfortable with people; enjoy communicating with new people
- Sensitive and aware of cultural differences, customs and diverse backgrounds
- Understanding of family nutritional needs is helpful
- Willingness to take directions; good team player with co-workers
- Willingness to maintain strict confidentiality of information regarding clients served
- Willingness to adhere to policies and practices of Salvation Army

A volunteer who accepts this position will gain satisfaction from seeing that he or she is helping families meet their basic needs. This person will play a vital role in helping social services staff devote more time to seeking ways of improving the services currently offered to people in need.
*Free parking is available in the building parking lot
Training and/or Screening Requirements
- A general orientation will be provided on all aspects of the Food Shelf program. Volunteers will be familiarized with the organization and lay-out of the food shelf, trained on how to prepare food orders properly and instructed on how to interact with clients.
- Training provided for specific tasks that are part of this job - usually 30 minutes in length
- Orientation to Salvation Army and policies for volunteers prior to first work experience.
Support from Staff
- Volunteers work in close contact and under direct supervision of staff in charge of food shelf
Length of Commitment
- 6 months
