The City Tutors (CT) is looking for tutors to provide academic support in math for the Division of Continuing Education at LaGuardia Community College. Study Groups with multiple students will run in the evening from 5-6PM. Evening study groups can run Monday, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
This a great opportunity for:
As a study group leader, you would facilitate sessions to improve students’ performance while being supported and guided by an experienced academic support professional. You would identify and support students who are struggling, encourage discussion and problem solving by students , and provide feedback to students so that they may improve their fundamental understanding of the material. You might also design assignments, identify/track students who are struggling and create differentiated instruction as the need arises. You will be supported throughout this process by the City Tutors staff.
All tutors are also expected to complete a four session comprehensive, professional training regimen. 6 hours of live training, plus another hour and a half for orientation. This is a commitment of 7.5 hours of in person training, and 4 hours of supplemental training for a total of 11.5 hours of training (4.5 hours if you have prior tutoring/education experience) over the course of the semester.
Training days will be determined based on your schedule and that of the Tutor Training Coordinators.
CT's tutoring program has been successful in helping students gain access to support that they otherwise would not have received, given their limited time spent on campus. Having a tutor in the class early in the semester will allow us to employ strategies to reduce withdrawals and student failure rates. Your work with us would help the students’ overall subject area performance, and help us improve this educational support model, reaching more students and departments with comprehensive academic support.

The City Tutors mission is to use tutoring as a means to increase community engagement and cultivate community members' professional growth.
We are the tutoring program for CCNY's Colin Powell School and a community organization that serves programs across 4 of the 5 boroughs. Currently we provide in-class tutors to support adult education programs at 5 CUNY schools, including CCNY, BMCC, LaGuardia, City Tech, and Hostos (and its extension campus, CUNY in the Heights). We are also partnered with five non-profits that provide high school equivalency support to the populations they serve: Childrens Aid Society, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corp, Henry Street Settlement, Goddard Riverside Community Center, and (through the Department of Youth and Community Development) Moshulu Montefiore Community Center. Outside of adult education, we work with housing projects, high schools, and a nano-tech lab. For most of our opportunities, we put tutors in classrooms where they are collaborating with an instructor to support students. We also do one-to-one and small group tutoring. We tailor the support to the needs of the site. We are a great place to tutor if you are in college, a working professional or a retired professional.
We'll work with your schedule.
This is a Virtual Opportunity, with no fixed address.
