A volunteer is sought with experience in publication design/desktop publishing for creating a common "look" for our museum's publications. These include promotional brochures, a comprehensive museum guide and periodic history articles. The volunteer will be asked to design easy to use templates in one or more simple, affordable programs (PC or Mac) that will allow museum members to publish and update its own outreach materials and history articles. This may include instruction on specific programs selected for the designs.
The designs should not be dependent on programs requiring annual subscriptions. They should reflect the design themes on the museum's website but suggestions for alternatives are welcomed. Please visit our website and examine it thoroughly -- including online publications such as the current museum guide -- before responding to this post.
This opportunity is particularly suitable for students or emerging professionals seeking to build their portfolios. Proximity to the museum is helpful but not essential. Most work is expected to be done remotely but periodic, face-to-face meetings with volunteers may be necessary.
This is viewed as a one-time opportunity.

Mission Statement
Preserve and educate about local history through events, activities, exhibits and programs at what was the last operating railroad depot in Fairfax County.
Description
The all-volunteer Friends of the Fairfax Station operate the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, dedicated in 1987, to preserve and educate about local history. A variety of events, programs and activities focus on local history, the importance of railroads to Fairfax County and Northern Virginia and the unique role of the station during the American Civil War.
All event planning and daily operations at Fairfax Station are the result of the commitment of our volunteers. We are in regular need for volunteers to assist with all aspects of museum operations, ranging from assisting with museum operations during open hours to fundraising, program development, facility maintenance and board leadership. We always are looking for dedicated individuals to help share the workload and increase the scope of the museum’s events and activities.
