You usually identify native trees and shrubs by their leaf-shape, but what about once winter hits and many plants lose their leaves? Don’t fret, the dormant twigs left behind have many clues that can be used to identify what they are. At this free community workshop, we will give you the tools to begin a practice in twig identification. With our work in urban forest restoration, winter is when we are planting most of our trees and shrubs, and it is important that we can identify which is which so we know we are planting the right plant in the right place. We will begin inside with a lecture, then we will head outside for a plant walk, and we will spend the final hour planting with some of the plants we talked about.

What to bring: Come dressed to work outside (rain or shine) with sturdy shoes. Bring a water bottle or coffee cup. We will provide tools, instruction, and work gloves.

Where to meet: Meet at Lions Hall, directly across from the upper main field at Forest Park.

Youth volunteers: If you are under 18 and attending the event without a parent or guardian, please come to the event with a Youth Waiver signed by a parent or guardian. The Green Everett Partnership youth release waiver can be found here: https://everettwa.gov/DocumentCenter/View/3359

The Green Everett Partnership Vision: Healthy forested parklands supported by an aware and engaged community in which individuals, neighborhoods, nonprofits, businesses, and city government are all working together to protect and maintain their valuable public resources.

Mission Statement

Forterra's mission is to act with immediacy to protect, enhance and steward our region's most precious resources--its communities and its landscapes. Since 1989, we have been working toward a future in which our children and grandchildren can experience nature in and around our urban environments.

Description

Forterra conserves land by working with individuals, companies and local governments. We strive to maximize the ecological value of land, while meeting the needs of landowners. We may accept land as a donation, purchase it, or transfer it to public ownership. We often serve as a broker to identify and negotiate the most effective ownership to protect important lands. We establish conservation easements to preserve special features. For each and every property, we explore available strategies or create new ones to provide permanent protection. Forterra has established a Conservation Agenda for our region, with specific priorities and methods for each type of landscape. Current initiatives include the protection of working forests on the foothills of the Cascades, and the creation of salmon sanctuaries along our region's highest quality rivers and streams.
