Mission Statement

The mission of the Zufall Health Center is to provide quality, affordable and culturally competent healthcare in partnership with our patients and the community in New Jersey. With the guidance of our consumer board and the efforts of our dedicated staff, we offer access to a broad array of medical and enabling services designed to eliminate health disparities and to improve the quality of life of our community.

Description

For nearly a quarter century, Zufall Health Center has been providing high-quality, affordable medical treatment to the working poor, uninsured, and underserved populations residing in and around Dover. Founded as the Dover Community Clinic by Dr. Robert Zufall and his wife, Kay, it was a tiny volunteer effort, operating just one night a week out of a modest room within the Morris County Organization of Hispanic Affairs. Today, Zufall Health Center has grown into a seven-day-a-week, state-licensed, Federally Qualified Health Center, and has extended its reach into numerous communities throughout north and central New Jersey.

Comprehensive services include adult and pediatric medicine, dental care, women’s health, cancer screening, podiatry, HIV care, neurology, and behavioral health and clinical pharmacy counseling. They are delivered by a caring, bi-lingual staff of board-certified physicians (paid and volunteer), dentists, social workers, pharmacists, and support professionals. The health center also offers enabling services including eligibility assistance, case management, transportation, health literacy training, outreach, and translation.

Zufall Health Center’s nearly 21,000 patients are among the neediest in the state. Currently, 64 percent are uninsured, with most of the remaining 35 percent on Medicaid, NJ Family Care, or Medicare. Almost 90 percent have incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Seventy-three percent of Zufall’s patients are Hispanic or Black, and almost 60 percent are best served in a language other than English.

During 2013, the center built on its remarkable accomplishments to meet the increasing demand for affordable, quality care. In August, the Zufall Healthy Smile Center opened in Flemington providing Hunterdon County with its first affordable dental facility.

Services by year’s end at the Dover, Morristown, Flemington, and Hackettstown sites and on the Highlands Health Van increased to a total of 68,151 patient visits.

In 2014, Zufall expanded into Somerset and Essex Counties. Its merger with the Women’s Health and Counseling Center brought primary care services for the whole family to Somerville. In June, a new medical office was opened in West Orange and a Wellness Center opened in Morristown, offering education and supportive services on nutrition, exercise, health literacy, insurance enrollment, and other health-related topics.
