Light Up the Lakefront Volunteer

On Tuesday, October 1 st, volunteers and staff will set up 2,500 luminaries on North Avenue Beach in Chicago, to honor the women, men & children who die each year in the U.S. as a result of domestic violence. Of course, we know that the number of women, men, and families affected by domestic violence each year is in the millions. Since its inception, the event has been held on October 1 st at the start of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The luminaries consist of lunch size paper bags filled with a few inches of sand, and a 5-inch plumber candle stuck in the middle. At dusk, staff and volunteers light the candles followed by a brief program. After this short program all who have gathered are encouraged to walk among the candles and take in this event’s impact. After about 10-15 minutes, candles are extinguished and clean up begins where all are welcomed to participate.
