Agriculture Expert Needed for All-Expense-Paid Pro-Bono Consulting Project in Nepal
ORGANIZATION: MovingWorlds
Please visit the new page to apply.
BACKGROUND:
MovingWorlds is a social enterprise helping professionals volunteer their skills with organizations all over the world who are innovatively solving local issues. "Experteering" is the word we coined for skills-based volunteering - the combination of the words expertise + volunteering. It is the act of volunteering your expertise, skills, experience, and time with organizations that need it. You can learn more about the Experteering Process here: https://bit.ly/2DuBqEA
It's been featured in WhyDev, SSIR, Devex, HBR, Forbes, FastCompany, and many more publications as a way to develop new skills and make a real impact!
MovingWorlds has partnered with the foundational arm of Siemens, Siemens Stiftung, to send an irrigation/agriculture expert all expenses paid to experteer with a social enterprise supporting access to clean energy by deploying hydropowered pumps in Nepal, and winner of the Siemens Stiftung empowering people award.
DESCRIPTION & IMPACT:
In irrigation, water cannot be decoupled from energy. Raising water from rivers and canals and distribute it to the crops requires pumping of water with a sizeable amount of pressure, which is usually generated by means of electric energy or by fuel-driven pumps. This turns into a substantial increase in energy consumption and capital expenditure, which has become a real concern for farmers and their communities worldwide. In a context exacerbated by the ongoing climate change, farmers need to reduce their water footprint by means of water-saving irrigation technologies while optimizing their energy costs for pumping, with the aim to ensure long-term economic and environmental sustainability.
This social enterprise is developing innovative hydropowered irrigation pumps, which use the energy from flowing water sources such as rivers or canals to pump water without using any fuel or electricity. The team strives to offer a solid value proposition to its customers while creating a positive impact in the world. These hydropowered water pumps create access to cost-efficient irrigation and/or serve to make existing irrigation schemes more cost efficient, in a sustainable manner.
Their first product, the Barsha Pump ("Barsha" means rain in Nepalese) has been sold in 12 countries across 4 continents, while scaling up the implementation of the Barsha Pump on a global scale.
The team is seeking an Agriculture Expert to come to Nepal, Indonesia (and possibly Colombia) for 3 months to support them in how to best distribute the water according to the technical capabilities of the pump and the requirements of each crop.
This project will help ensure that the farmers are able to use their new water pumps in a way that sustains them financially, so as to lessen the risks that they incur.
DELIVERABLES:
The project will be considered successful if the selected candidate can research and compile a list of crops best suited for the pump, taking market value and technical capabilities of the pump into account. After completing this analysis, the emphasis should be on training & upskilling the existing team members.
LOCAL BENEFITS PROVIDED:
Accommodations - housing will be provided for the selected candidate while in-country
Travel Stipend - all travel costs, both international and in-country, will be covered for the selected candidate
Learning Opportunity - Travel to different areas in Nepal, Indonesia and Colombia and learn about the context, culture and economy.
Meal Stipend - meals will be provided, including local meals typical in the country of placement and preference of the selected candidate
This project is also willing to consider applications for virtual experteers.
