Volunteer Position Description:
Volunteers will work together in teams to construct the LEGO models for the competition table-top playing fields. Dozens of LEGO models need to be constructed to spec to be used throughout the state at competitions. LEGO building instructions will be provided. NOTE: Minimum age is 9 years old to volunteer for this "FLL BUILD DAY".

Orientation and Training: The Maryland State FIRST LEGO League Planning Committee will supervise this activity and provide on-site training.

More about the FIRST LEGO League season in Maryland: There will be 20+ competitions around the state starting in December 2018 and ending with a state championship in February 2019. There are 350+ teams this year for FIRST LEGO League in Maryland. UMBC is the state partner for Maryland FIRST LEGO League. All competitions are hosted and run by hundreds of volunteers at sites ranging from college campuses, corporate offices (like the Applied Physics Lab), to community groups (like the Girl Scouts and the Y of Central Maryland).

More about FIRST LEGO League:

Guided by two or more adult Coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams (up to 10 members, ages 9-14) research a real-world problem and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS(r), then compete on a table-top playing field. Each FIRST LEGO League season culminates with regional tournaments and championships where teams show off what they learned and invented, and compete with their robots.

The theme this year: Join our mission into the 30th season of FIRST (r)! Prepare for blast off, break out of your earthly constraints and go INTO ORBIT. The 2018/2019 FIRST (r) LEGO(r) League season will transport your team into space, where you’ll explore, challenge, and innovate in the vast expanse of space.

Mission Statement

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a result of an exciting alliance between FIRST and the LEGO Company. Guided by adult mentors and their own imaginations, FLL students solve real-world engineering challenges and develop important life skills. UMBC (under the umbrella of the University of Maryland Foundation) serves as the organization partner for FLL in Maryland.

Description

FIRST LEGO League provides students age 9-14 with a hands-on, interactive robotics program in a sports-like atmosphere. Teams of up to 10 players focus on team building, problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking to develop solutions to a problem currently facing the world - the Challenge.

Each August, a new Challenge is unveiled to FLL teams across the world. Over the ensuing several months the teams strategize, design, build, program, test and refine a fully autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS(tm) technology. The teams also do their own research, talk to professionals, and develop compelling presentations which relate to the Challenge. At FLL competitions, the teams are evaluated on their robot’s performance, their presentation, teamwork, and robot design. With the guidance of an all-volunteer planning committee led by UMBC and with hundreds of volunteers, the teams compete at one of the 20+ qualifying competitions around the state of Maryland. 72 teams will then qualify for the FLL Maryland State Championship held in February 2019 at UMBC.
