Mission Statement

The Jewish Healthcare Foundation (JHF) is a public charity that offers a unique blend of research, education, grantmaking and program management to advance the quality of clinical care and health of populations. Its current focus is promoting safety, best practice and efficiency at the front line of care, and building a workforce to sustain this. To accomplish its goals, JHF created three operating arms -- the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative (PRHI) in 1998, Health Careers Futures (HCF) in 2003, and the Women's Health Activist Movement Global (WHAMglobal) in 2017. Together these organizations develop and manage programs, research, training and grantmaking to perfect patient care. JHF is also the fiscal agent for State HIV/AIDS funding in Pennsylvania. We are funded by public and private sources, and the JHF endowment.

Description

The Jewish Healthcare Foundation's Virtual Senior Academy is a free online learning platform for seniors 50 years and older. It creates a collaborative space for older adults to continue their lifelong learning while interacting with their peers in real time using video conferencing technology. The Virtual Senior Academy offers classes to suit a broad range of interests including: health and wellness, history, book clubs, arts and music and so much more!

We launched in August 2016 and have spent the last year growing the program. Currently, seniors participate from their home using their own computer or tablet and internet, or from communal settings like senior centers, apartment buildings and libraries. Seniors can take classes on their own or can sit together in a congregate setting using a projector or big screen TV to watch and engage in the class together.
