ORGANIZATION: Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF)

The Admissions team at HEAF is responsible for developing, planning, implementing and managing HEAFs Outreach and Admissions strategy, recruiting HEAF scholars for each of HEAF’s classes, and engaging and building relationships with external champions, including schools, NYCHA, and faith-based organizations. The Admissions Program assistant supports the Manager of Admissions and Community Relations with outreach, communications and data entry to ensure that we are achieving our admissions strategy and recruiting high-quality applicants.

Location: HEAF Harlem Site - 2090 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd, 10 th Floor, New York, NY 10027

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct phone calls to potential HEAF families (bi-lingual candidates preferred)
  • Assist with putting together materials and mailings to send to potential families and schools
  • Collect and maintain student information, including application and other supplemental materials (such as report cards)
  • Record data entry for admissions applications and supporting documents

Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter and team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, and a positive attitude.
  • Experience with database management and analysis
  • Ability to set clear goals and follow through with flexible and creative problem solving.
  • Conceptual ability for the larger perspective with a strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
  • Working knowledge of computer and internet-based programs for use in communication, data entry and research. (e.g. using Microsoft Software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to converse and write in English and Spanish preferred

Time Commitment: Volunteer’s weekly hours range from 5-10 hours per week depending on designated weekly work levels. The specific schedule is flexible and will be arranged with Manager of Admissions and Community Outreach

Support: Orientation and training will be provided to the Program Assistant. Additionally, regular weekly check-ins will take place with the Manager of Admissions and Community Relations

This position is an unpaid, volunteer position that reports to the Manager of Admissions and Community Relations.

HEAF is an effective supplemental education and youth leadership nonprofit that works to help high-potential but under-served New York City public school students become high-achieving college graduates. HEAF identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they are successfully admitted to four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, Saturday, summer, and youth development programs. In the last 15 years, 100% of our students have graduated from high school and 83% of our students have received a degree from college within six years or less.
