Talk Time is an informal conversation practice group for people learning English. The library program is facilitated by an English speaker, and the participants simply practice English in a group setting. The two basic tenets of Talk Time are that people feel welcome and in a safe environment that encourages practice, and that they have the time they need to "find" the right word which can often call for some silent moments! It is not a language instruction program and participants are not corrected on usage or pronunciation.

Here are the qualifications that are needed to be a Talk Time facilitator:

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Flexibility and humor

  • Experience teaching ESL or leading conversation circles

  • Sensitivity to the challenges that non-native English speakers may encounter

  • Experience living in another country is a plus

Talk Time is an ongoing commitment. Groups meet weekly, and we hope for a year’s commitment from volunteers, but ask for six months at the minimum. Two facilitators are needed on Mondays from 6:00-7:30 PM at Capitol Hill Library, 10723 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219.
