LBFE Chicago Chapter
Join us and help end loneliness!

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly's philosophy, programs and activities are focused on alleviating loneliness among elders. The need for social interaction is critical to the human spirit - we believe that nurturing the soul is as important as feeding the body.

During the holiday season, which for Little Brothers begins on Thanksgiving and runs through the end of December, we work to bring friendship and engagement to over 1,000 elders. Under usual circumstances, Little Brothers hosts three Thanksgiving Day parties, three Christmas Day parties and delivers each of our elders a personal holiday gift during the month of December. In 2020, we have made several adaptations, most importantly that we will deliver 800 meals to elders on Thanksgiving and Christmas Days and also deliver 800 holiday gifts in the month of December. All deliveries will be contactless and volunteers and elders must wear a mask and practice social distancing at all times.

Volunteers will support Little Brothers elders in the Chicago area in by:

Bring a meal to an elder: Volunteers will pick up a holiday meal at our offices at 355 N Ashland Ave and bring to an elder's home. Deliveries occur outside of an elder's home/building. Volunteers will call the elder once they arrive to have the elder come outside to meet them. Friendly conversation afterwards is expected. Pick up times on Thanksgiving and Christmas will be between 10-11, 11-12, 12-1, 1-2. Time commitment will be around 2 hours and volunteers will be asked to take a minimum of two meals. Drop-off locations will all be in the same area of the city.

Delivery a holiday gift:
Volunteers will pick up a wrapped holiday gift at our offices at 355 N Ashland Ave and bring to an elder's home. Deliveries occur outside of an elder's home/building. Friendly conversation afterwards is expected. Gift pickup begins Dec. 1st and continues until Dec. 24th. If additional deliveries are necessary, we will begin again on Dec. 26th - Dec. 31st. Volunteers will call the elder to schedule a date/time, then come to our office to retrieve the gift. Volunteers can take any number of gifts for delivery.

About Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly Chicago Chapter

Location:

355 N Ashland Avenue, Chicago, IL 60607, US

Mission Statement

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly is a national network of non-profit volunteer-based organizations committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly. We offer to people of goodwill the opportunity to join the elderly in friendship and celebration of life.

Description

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is committed to meeting the needs of elders who are isolated and alone. Our motto, flowers before bread, expresses the belief that love, dignity and beauty in life are as important as basic physical needs. This philosophy is reflected in all of our activities, which include one-on-one visits, holiday parties, vacations in the country and individual birthdays celebrated by the delivery of a cake and a gift. The quality of our services is just as important as the services themselves. The elders served by LBFE have little or no contact with family and friends, few financial resources and many reside in dangerous and deteriorating neighborhoods. When we enter their lives we provide them with companionship, which is something that many of them have not had in years.

Last year we served nearly 1,200 elders, with the indispensable help of over 1,300 volunteers giving more than 54,000 hours of their time.

We have a broad range of opportunities for volunteers, donors and elders to share, learn, grow...and to celebrate life. Opportunities are available year-round. LBFE is great way for families to volunteer together and to introduce youth to service.

Help LBFE bring elders from isolation to celebration!
