We want to thank you again for volunteering with OHBD in the past. We are now seeking volunteers for our Open Hearts Big Dreams Gala on Saturday, on Nov. 10, 2018 at Northwest African American Museum, 2300 S Massachusetts St, Seattle, WA 98144, 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm! We would be so grateful to again have your support for this fun event that provides sustaining funds for OHBD projects and priorities. The evening will be a lively celebration of the cuisine, music, art, and poetry of Ethiopia, featuring silent and live auctions, and a raffle. This event is an opportunity to learn more about Open Hearts Big Dreams’ bold plans and support its goal to increase opportunities for kids in Ethiopia.

All evening volunteers are asked to dress up in your finest and arrive on-time for training. Volunteers are asked to not drink the complementary wine offered to guests. Parking is on site at NAAM. Below is the list of volunteer assignments from which to choose however we reserve the right to move you to another area if needed.  All who can are asked to assist with clean-up which will be finished by 11:30 pm. Set-up: Saturday, Nov. 10 from 11:30 am - 5:00 pm

Help set up the silent auction rooms and decorate. Wear jeans and comfortable shoes!

Night of Gala: Saturday, Nov. 10 5:00 pm-11:30 pm

5:00 pm - 10:30 pm (dinner included) Training provided.

  • Coat check/Greeters: Greet guests, take their items, escort and orient them. Monitor throughout the evening. Retrieve items at end of evening and return to guests.
  • Registration: Help check in guests, cashier, data entry of silent and live auction items and filing. Assist with check-out of guests. (age 18+ only; requires separate training class on our Greater Giving software 2-3 days prior to event, TBD.)
  • Door Ambassadors for Paccar Gallery: Absolutely no food or beverages are allowed in the Paccar Gallery. Monitor guests entering the gallery for any food or drink. Ask them to leave their glass/plates on tables outside gallery, offering sticker to ID their items.
  • Golden Raffle ticket sales: Circle room to invite guests to buy raffle tickets. (requires separate training class on our Greater Giving software 2-3 days prior to event, TBD.)
  • Silent Auction Host: Keep the silent auction tables tidy and unobtrusively offer assistance to attendees with questions about the items.
  • Silent Auction Closer: Close silent auction sections and bag/box up items for guests, assist with check-out
  • Fixed price table: Sell books, t-shirts, etc.(requires separate training class on our Greater Giving software 2-3 days prior to event, TBD.)

6:00 pm - 11:30 pm (dinner included) Training provided.

  • Dining Room Servers: serve food, refill water, collect dirty dishes, pick up bid sheets for dessert dash, and deliver desserts.
  • Bartenders: Pour alcohol for guests (age 21+ only)
  • Live Auction Spotters: Help the auctioneer spot bidders in the audience
  • Bid Recorder: Record winning bidder on form to give to runner. (age 18+ only)
  • Live Auction Runners: Run completed bid sheets to guests and data entry. Also, deliver a small gift to the winning bidder.
  • Check-out: Leads will have 5 checkout stations to process payments. Volunteers will man the auction item storage area to retrieve goods.(requires separate training class on our Greater Giving software 2-3 days prior to event, TBD.)
  • Take down: Gather up registration area, collect rented items and decor, and clean up according to parks department requirements

We greatly appreciate your generous gift of time. Last year’s event was a lot of fun for everyone and we look forward to seeing many of you again.

Open Hearts Big Dreams Fund (OHBD) believes the chance to dream big dreams should not depend on where in the world you are born.

Ethiopia is Africa’s second most populous country. Ethiopia’s population is 44% children, ages 0-14 (43 million out of 97 million total). Only 5.5% of children attend pre-school or kindergarten. Only 68% of ages 7-12 attend primary school. Adult literacy stands at 49% with men at 57% and women at 41%. Only 7.5% of the adult population have any post-secondary education.
