The rescued horses, 13 right now, are located on a farm near Ocala, Florida. Clearwater is just the office, no horses. At the rescue itself, we need help with just general horse care, feeding, grooming, and all the rest. Once the work of maintaining their health is done, attention turns to training. Our founder, Dana Gatlin, is also our trainer and has years of experience as well as experience riding competitively as a jumper.
Dana makes an initial decision on what the horse is suited for and a training program is designed. Volunteers can assist her is all parts of the program. Some horses may go towards occupations as jumpers or dressage, while others are great for trail rides, or even just as pets. Horses like to have jobs to do, and excel when they can learn and use their talent. Dana works to bring out the very best and you can join in.
But everyone has to learn the basics of just taking care of the horses first. Dana puts a lot into nutrition the same way any top athlete would. She prepares special diets for each horse.
Volunteers will be screened in advance.

Mission Statement
OUR MISSION: * To network with individuals and other reputable non-profit organizations to intercept horses and ponies in danger of being shipped to Mexico to be inhumanely destroyed * To take these animals into our care or that of a fellow rescue for rehabilitation and retraining * To ultimately match them with approved homes where they will be forever loved and honored * To assist adopters with quarantine and transportation resources * To increase public awareness of the current U.S. slaughter statistics and laws, the industries that profit from them, and how each one of us can arm ourselves with knowledge and make our voices heard
Description
- Mare's Legacy Equine Rescue is dedicated to saving horses and other equines who are on the brink of a tragic ending that no human or animal deserves. The rescue itself is the culmination of a lifetime of taking in all kinds of animals in desperate situations, now with a primary focus on ending the all too common cycle in our country, where horses are often viewed as disposable.
We take these animals into our care for rehabilitation and retraining. They will be matched with approved homes where they will be forever loved and honored. We assist adopters with quarantine, transportation resources, and ongoing support . And we increase public awareness of the current U.S. slaughter statistics and laws, the industries that profit from them, and how each one of us can arm ourselves with knowledge and make our voices heard.
