We will be partnering with Guerrilla Garden for Veterans Day Weekend!!

We will be deconstructing old benches and picnic table then building 6 new benches with planter boxes, 3 new picnic tables and planting fresh fruits and vegetables at Guerrilla Garden in the Lower 9th Ward. Guerrilla Garden is a project of The Backyard Gardeners Network: http://backyardgardenersnetwork.org/

We will be building, painting, weeding and other light tasks.

A little about Guerrilla Garden:

VISION - A vibrant greenspace in place of blighted land where families can congregate and socialize, grow vegetables and pick from fruit trees.

The Guerrilla Garden is a project conceived, developed and implemented by Lower Ninth Ward residents committed to community revitalization. Beginning in April 2009, residents and waves of volunteers from around the country have worked together clearing this lot, planning the space, securing resources. Once an overgrown dumping ground, this space is now a beautiful community green space, featuring a small fruit tree grove, a shade structure, raised garden beds, and an outdoor kitchen space. The Guerrilla Garden is about community building and community ownership, eliminating blight and improving food access. It is meant to be a place for folks of all ages to get together and learn from each other.

Food and drinks will be provided. No experience is necessary. Children are welcome to attend.

Mission Statement

We are on a mission to connect veterans with under-resourced communities: empowering veterans to continue their service, while empowering communities with the talent, skills and preparedness of veterans to generate visible impact.

Description

The Mission Continues is a national, nonpartisan nonprofit that empowers veterans to continue their service, and empowers communities with veteran talent, skills and preparedness to generate visible impact.

Veterans possess the drive and desire to serve others, but without access to the tools needed, their potential to make meaningful impact at the local level remains untapped. On the other end of the spectrum growing numbers of communities in this country are under-resourced and being left behind.

At The Mission Continues, we’re on a mission to connect veterans with under-resourced communities.

Our programs in cities across the country deploy veteran volunteers alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, increase access to parks and green spaces, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Our vision is for all veterans with a desire to continue their service to be part of a movement to transform communities.
