Teach the Future @ Harper's Choice MS is looking for volunteers!

We're looking for volunteers like you to help us provide our students in one-on-one personalized math tutoring for Fall 2018!

Teach the Future provides supplementary educational resources to differently-abled students with ADHD, ADD or a learning disability in order to enable them for performing at their highest capability. We're ensuring that every student has the resources they need to perform at their capability.

It's difficult to concentrate in a room of ~30 kids with a monotonous teacher standing 20 feet away, especially for those with attention deficit disorders. Anything can be more interesting- the new poster, tapping a pencil, or (the loud kids in the hallways) about yesterday's soccer game.

There isn't always a teaching assistant for every student that would benefit from one. And not all students with an attention deficit disorder is eligible for IEPs. However, it's definitely clear that one-on-one tutoring catered specifically to the student's needs will help improve their grades at school and on standardized scores. Instead of a large class where it's (honestly) the student's choice to tune in or tune out, we've got one tutor focus fully on their student. Instead of boring explanations on the whiteboard, we use creative and interactive teaching methods. Instead of boxing the student to finish standard apple and orange problems, we encourage them to verbalize and come up with their own stories to math problems- ones that will keep them engaged and interested.

Your tutoring will bring smiles to students and help them foster a positive relationship with the once daunting math. A structured curriculum, training, and continuous support from experienced (officers? Lead tutors?) will be provided.

Each week, we hold our tutoring sessions on Thursday from 2:45-4:00 pm.

We're looking for anyone over the age of 14 to join our tutoring corps, no previous experience required!

If you're ready to build strong and lasting student-mentor relationships that will help

Service hours are honored.

About Teach the Future

Location:

732 Cloverly Street, Silver Spring, MD 20905, US

Mission Statement

We believe that every child in America deserves to have a quality education, no matter their circumstance. Children with learning disabilities or ADHD often struggle in school, not because they lack the capacity to learn, but because they need a different learning environment to succeed. Teach the Future provides an opportunity for those kids to have an individualized learning experience through our free tutoring services.

Description

Teach the Future was founded in 2017 to help children with ADHD or learning disabilities from low income families. Kids with ADHD or learning disabilities often do not get enough support in their education, especially if they are enrolled in the regular school program (which is more likely for less privileged schools that do not have the resources to accommodate every student’s needs). Those children face exceptional challenges in their academic and social life, and frequently have low self-confidence as a result.

We believe that kids with ADHD or learning disabilities can succeed if they are provided the right environment to help them learn. Individualized teaching is the best way to help children with such needs, but it can be prohibitively expensive for most families. That is where we step in. We can provide supplemental learning opportunities for these children that allow them to work one-on-one with a tutor every week, all at no cost.
