We need your help! At this event, we will be mulching the Ross Andrews Trail, laying rip rap (that's rock!) into a shallow drainage depression and clearing some brush and debris away for a nature play area (to be constructed at a later date.) Thank you for your service!

Volunteer Impact: The Ross Andrews Trail is used for individuals and school groups, but has not been mulched since 2016. This fresh batch of mulch will not only look better, but it will keep weeds down, and make the trail more identifiable and traversable for groups. The new drainage area will pull water away from the education center, so people will not have to walk in the mud. Most of the new area for a nature play area has been cleared of vegetation, but it needs a little more and there is a lot of debris that needs to be moved to make it safe for children.

Volunteer Duties: Using a pitchfork or shovel to load mulch into a wheelbarrow. Using wheelbarrow to move mulch. Using a garden rake to distribute mulch. Loading rip rap (rock) into a wheelbarrow. Placing rock into a small ditch. Using clippers and gloves to remove briers and undergrowth vegetation. Moving debris.

Work Environment:This is outdoors work of moderate-heavy intensity, depending on the task, but many hands make light work!. We will be adjacent to the building within reach of coffee, water, snacks and tools. It should be pretty shady. We will have bug spray if it is needed. There is poison ivy present. There is a restroom on site and there will be uneven ground.

Volunteer Requirements: The minimum age to volunteer is 14. All volunteers must fill out a volunteer release form. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the form as well. These will be emailed to you prior to the event.

Special Instructions: Volunteers should wear clothing that can get dirty, messy or torn. Please bring a refillable water bottle. We will provide coffee, hot chocolate, snacks and water, and bug spray. You may want sunscreen, though the work area is pretty shady.

Group Registration Information: Registration as a volunteer is first come, first served. A group leader must email mary.owens@raleighnc.gov to register. All groups will be required to provide a list of names and emails for their volunteers.

This project is rain or shine, unless cancelled by the City of Raleigh.

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
