All hands are welcome and appreciated at our urban farm located in DC's food deserts. Past volunteers having included schools, corporations, and individuals. Volunteering involves working in our farm to accomplish a variety of tasks ranging from intense to low labor. After a discussion surrounding food justice, any number of tasks may be need attention such as: seedblocking, harvesting, trenching, building beds, installations, planting and more may be a part of the days work. This is a great experience for groups to bond and to directly give back to the community. Volunteers are vital in moving our mission forward and make a direct impact in feeding bodies, nourishing minds, and building communities. We welcome all ages, however, youth below 15 y/o should be accompanied by an adult. Feel free to reach out to info@dcurbangreens.org if you have any questions or interest in volunteering. Come get your hands dirty, enjoy great company, and give back to the community!

Mission Statement

At DC UrbanGreens we increase accessibility of affordable healthy foods to residents living in DC's food desert neighborhoods. We employ innovative and scalable methods, techniques and business models to implement small-scale urban agriculture in a fiscally and environmentally sustainable way. We lessen household food insecurity, strengthen community self-reliance and increase our children’s ability to grow and learn. Our food is grown in DC's Ward 7 and 8, right in the neighborhoods that need it most. Low income areas lacking easy access to grocery stores.

Description

DC’s food desert residents are not only subjected to food insecurity and inequity, but also high crime, unemployment, malnourishment, and critical health issues. In order to address these neighborhood challenges, we are committed to using urban agriculture as a vehicle to promote community resilience. Through our programming, DC UrbanGreens meets the following community needs: (1) Improve access to healthy foods in DC’s food desert neighborhoods; (2) Provide opportunities for healthy activity and community engagement; (3) Provide employment and job training to low-income DC residents; (4) Increase productivity, greening and economic opportunity of underutilized lands in the District of Columbia. Our key programs include: Production, Distribution, Nutrition Education, Community Outreach, Job Training & Employment.
