Position Overview and Impact:

The Veterans Resource Outreach Specialist is responsible for the delivery of Veterans Resource Station activities at a branch, event or library pop-up; the dissemination of information about veterans’ benefits and services; the provision of directional assistance to individuals in obtaining these benefits; and informing veterans and military families about library programs, services and resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be punctual and consistent with attendance
  • Cover the Veterans Resource Station and/or pop-ups in a designated library for a minimum of one 2-hour shift per week, or once a month depending on the library or event
  • Meet with veterans and/or military families to determine individual needs and connect them with appropriate resources
  • Guide veterans and military families toward benefits that are best matched to their situation and facilitate access to a variety of resources, such as the CalVet Resource Handbook and the County Veterans Services Office (CVSO)
  • Maintain data as required by the program, the Library or other allied organizations

Requirements:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to respect and maintain patron confidentiality in all interactions
  • Ability to maintain effective personal and professional boundaries in all interactions
  • Attendance at Library and program orientations and trainings
  • Completion of a series of (6) online training modules
  • Ability to work on a computer or mobile device (i.e. tablet)/enter data
  • Submit program documentation as required

Optional:

  • Previous armed services experience an advantage, but not required

Skills:

  • Ability to interact with diverse participants, discuss a wide range of issues, and determine effective and appropriate course of referral
  • Ability to provide excellent public service
  • Ability to work collaboratively with agencies, library staff and other program volunteers
  • Proficient with MS Office
