We are searching for mentors to work with teens with sickle cell disease who are active members of our SC Crew Teen Transition program. The SC Crew provides a supportive trusting environment for teenagers with sickle cell disease to learn, grow, build relationships and have fun. Meetings are held once a month on Saturdays with teens.

Qualifications:
Anyone over the age of 18 who is committed to helping teens may apply to become a SC Crew Mentor. No specific education background is required, but volunteers must have strong communication and problem solving skills. All volunteers will be interviewed and will undergo a reference and background check, including fingerprinting.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete the SC Crew Volunteer Mentor Training
  • Attend the SC Crew Meet Ups once a month on Saturdays.
  • Contact assigned mentee(s) once a week for a minimum of one year
  • Maintain & submit monthly documentation/case management files on each mentee assigned to you
  • Contact parents once a quarter to go over the mentee's progression in the program
  • Be available for conference calls with Program Director and Lead Mentor
  • Fulfill a minimum one-year commitment to the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation SC Crew Teen Transition Program

The Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California (SCDFC) is the first and oldest non-profit, social service, sickle cell disease organization in the United States today. Founded in 1957, the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California has maintained a viable and reputable organization for over 60 years.

We address the needs of individuals with sickle cell disease and their families by emphasizing educational and support programs and services that meet the physical, psycho social and economic needs of our clients.

With a growing population of individuals with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait, the primary focus of the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California is to educate, screen and counsel those persons at risk of having children with sickle cell disease and other hemoglobin disorders.
