Open Door Legal is pioneering the country’s first system of universal access to civil representation and working to show that when everyone has access to the law, poverty can be dramatically reduced.
We won the 2015 Google Impact Challenge and we’ve been recognized by the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation for our innovative, results-oriented program. Long-term, we plan to replicate our services across San Francisco, make this city the first in the country with universal access to civil representation, and become a model for national replication.

We're inviting committed volunteers with legal training to join us in making sure the law belongs to all of us. We offer the ability to get practical, hands-on experience working with low-income clients in a variety of circumstances. Qualified volunteers will manage their own cases, do their own hearings, and potentially negotiate with an adverse party under the training and supervision of our staff.
Open Door Legal is looking for externs/interns/legal fellows willing to volunteer in-house for a minimum of 12 hours/week. Volunteers who have recently taken the bar will gain extremely useful experience with direct legal practice that can help lead to a job upon passing.
We currently need volunteers to join our consumer/personal injury/general team and the immigration/affirmative housing team. These are research and writing-heavy positions with some opportunity to lead intakes. We are also interested in a legal fellow with a basic housing background knowledge to join our housing team.
