Ora Mae Feeling The Warmth Of Her Alice's Embrace Shawl

We are seeking a few people to assist with an Alice's Embrace delivery. We have people from all across the country knitting and crocheting our lap blanket and prayer shawl patterns and then they send the items to us. We sew a label on and then it's ready for its new owner. When we go to memory care communities, we take twice as many items as there are residents, so they can truly choose their own gift. A delivery consists of the Alice's Embrace team placing all of the blankets and shawls on a six foot long table. Then, the residents will either "shop" from the table, or we will approach them to give them a few options. Once their gift is chosen, then we write their name on the Alice's Embrace label. It is a heartwarming experience. We do visit with people who are dealing with every different stage of the disease, so patience is important. Please visit our website, and take a look at the Gallery page. You will see plenty of folks who have already received items from us: http://alicesembrace.org/gallery/

We never know who we will meet at these deliveries, but what we do know is that we will see smiles and we will bring comfort to some very deserving folks.

Please take a look at our newsletters to get a better idea of the magical experience of a delivery: http://alicesembrace.org/news/

Mission Statement

Alice's Embrace is a non-profit organization devoted to providing hand-knit and hand-crocheted prayer shawls and lap blankets to those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. We seek volunteers to knit and crochet the patterns that we have created. Through the loving hands of many generous and talented people, this endeavor will help warm, comfort, and soothe these folks facing the daily challenges of the disease.

Description

Diane Lewis founded Alice's Embrace in memory of her mom, Alice, who passed away from Alzheimer's in 2011. When Alice was first diagnosed with the disease, Diane knit her a blanket. Throughout her illness that blanket gave her so much comfort and warmth, and it helped with anxiety that is often present with the disease. After Alice passed away, Diane wanted to help others dealing with the same daily struggles as her mom. Diane created a website and 26 patterns. These patterns are available free on the website. We have volunteers who knit and crochet our patterns. They either send them to us, or they take them to one of our drop-off locations listed on our website.

We sew an Alice's Embrace label on each item. This label is extra special because it has a spot for the new owner's name to be written. We then take the items to memory care facilities in California and Northern Nevada. We call this a "delivery". When we go to a facility for a delivery, we take twice as many items as there are residents so that they can truly choose their own gift. When we make these deliveries we need volunteers to help make the event run smoothly... one of those volunteers is a photographer.

The folks who receive our gifts are extremely grateful for their lap blanket or prayer shawl. With the help from all the volunteers who are involved, we can continue bringing joy to these special people. Please consider joining in... check out our volunteer opportunities.
