Plans for the 2023 MSU Tollgate Farm and Education Center Pumpkinfest are underway, and we would love your help. Pumpkinfest is a family-oriented event open to the public 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, October 7th, and Sunday, October 8th. Educational and fun, Pumpkinfest explores the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.
MSU requires all volunteers to complete the Volunteer Central Application. This can be found on our web page MSU TOLLGATE VOLUNTEERING. A background check will be completed with this application process.
Proceeds from Pumpkinfest allow us to provide scholarships for suburban and Detroit-area school children to visit our farm through camps and field trips.
Pumpkinfest relies on a wonderful team of volunteers.
Some of these roles include:
- Volunteer center- manage the food inventory for the volunteers
- Wagon Ride- help visitors on and off the wagon
- Pumpkin patch- help visitors with their pumpkin purchases
- Concessions- package food and fill food orders
- Children’s activities - monitor children's Straw Maze area and the inflatable archery activity
- Parking attendants -Adults help direct traffic for the event
- Fishing helpers - help with baiting the hooks and release fish
- Pumpkin painting - manage paint supplies for activity and monitor as needed
- Welcome table - greet guest for information and payment at the event

Mission Statement
MSU Tollgate provides non-formal learning opportunities for children, families, and adults, offering the unique opportunity to experience agriculture hands-on in an urban environment. Using research based curriculum and methods, visitors can explore the joys of gardening and the natural world, appreciate and promote locally grown food, and develop a healthy community.
Description
The views of rolling farmland available around MSU Tollgate are practically unknown elsewhere in present-day Oakland County, making it one of the original historical sites of Novi, Michigan. The 160 acre farmstead is currently owned by Michigan State University, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Americana Foundation. The MSU Tollgate farm site represents a working farm with animals, community gardens, and sustainable agriculture demonstrations.
We host a variety of educational programs and classes such as:
- 4-H youth programs
- Homeowner horticulture
- Community food systems education
- Woodlot management
- Agriculture and natural resources
