After training, volunteers would provide encouragement or assistance to patients to eat and drink using safe swallowing techniques. The benefits for the patient include improved oral intake, happiness through socialization, decreased food waste, improved oral hygiene, and a reduced need for a feeding tube.

This benefits volunteers who are considering a career in nursing to have a 1:1 experience with patients. For all volunteers, it is an opportunity to help our patients heal more quickly by providing good nutrition.

Volunteers assigned to Taste Buds are also trained to provide other services to the patients on our nursing units. This includes: friendly visiting, helping patients order food, teaching them how to use the television system, and running errands.
