Work Off the Beaten Path: Protect the Trail's Corridor

Join the Connecticut Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club on Saturday, September 29th from 9 a.m to 3 p.m as they work to monitor and protect the integrity of the National Park Service "corridor" surrounding the Appalachian Trail footpath. This work ensures that the corridor is kept free from encroachments and illegal uses as well as finding and maintaining the boundaries surveyed monuments.
The group will bushwhack along the survey lines, using map & compass, to locate the survey monuments, record their details, repaint "witness" trees with yellow paint blazing and place U.S. Boundary signs as needed. Some clearing of brush along the boundary sight lines may also be required. If you like to get off the beaten path and learn new orientation skills, this would be a perfect hiking activity for you.
The group will meet at the Housatonic Valley Association located at 150 Kent Rd S, Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut. Near the junction of Routes 7 and 45. Please wear long pants, sturdy boots. Also bring bug spray, sunscreen, work gloves, lunch and plenty of water.
We will be done in time for the CT A.T. day cookout which will take place later that day in Macedonia Brook State Park. Enjoy an afternoon in the company of fellow A.T. enthusiasts.
