What is Breakthrough?

Breakthrough San Francisco is an educational non-profit that supports young people in San Francisco on the path to college and trains outstanding college students for education careers.

What will volunteers be doing?

We're looking for volunteers to tutor and teach enthusiastic 5th-8th graders from across San Francisco through our comprehensive, tuition-free after-school program. All volunteers receive extensive training and ongoing support from Breakthrough’s program staff; all programming takes place at SF Day School (350 Masonic Avenue at Golden Gate Avenue). In addition, we're excited to continue the 1:1 virtual academic support for our high school students that we launched during the pandemic.

What is the commitment?

After a year and a half on Zoom, we're excited to resume in-person programming in fall 2021, helping our students deepen their academic skills and sense of community following the pandemic.

Anticipated Schedule:
*Mon, Tue, Wed, and Thu from 4:30 - 6:30 pm, in-person at SF Day School

Back-Up Schedule (if required by public health conditions, due to COVID):
*Tue and Thu from 4:30 - 6:30 pm, in-person at SF Day School
*Sat from 10 am - 12 pm (tentative timing), in-person at SF Day School
*Wed from 4:30 - 6:30 pm, on Zoom

The volunteer commitment is one session per week, beginning the week of October 4 and running through the week of November 29 (except for Thanksgiving week). Volunteers are also required to attend training sessions, take part in a mid-semester check-in conversation, and complete other work as needed. Volunteers must be fully vaccinated in order to work with students in-person. Please see the application for more details.

How to Apply

The application can be found at www.breakthroughsf.org/tutor and is due by Fri, Sept 17. Questions can be directed to Sara Marcopulos, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, at sara@breakthroughsf.org.

Mission Statement

Breakthrough supports young people in San Francisco on the path to college, and trains outstanding college students for education careers.

Description

At Breakthrough, we believe all young people should have access to an excellent education, a clear pathway to college, and highly effective teachers committed to their success. In pursuit of this vision, we provide intensive, year-round academic enrichment and support to motivated 5-12th graders with limited educational opportunities, helping them attend college, as well as optional follow-up support. In addition, we train outstanding college students from across the country for education careers: developing their instructional skills, building their knowledge of pathways to teaching, and inspiring them to work in the field.

We are proud that 100% of students in our first four graduating classes are currently enrolled in college, including 88% at four-year schools. Meanwhile, two-thirds of our Teaching Fellows who've graduated from college in the past decade are currently working in the education sector, most of them as urban public school teachers. We are an initiative of SF Day School, a K-8 independent school that values increasing opportunity for all students, and one of two dozen national affiliates of the Oakland-based organization Breakthrough Collaborative.
