Woodland Planting on Nicollet Island

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Friends of the Mississippi River

Join us for the first public restoration event on Nicollet Island! After over a year of planning, Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) is beginning habitat restoration on Nicollet Island. This will include removal of invasive species, enhancement of degraded forest areas, and the creation of new, diverse habitat, including two acres of native prairie and the re-creation of a pocket of maple forest historically present on the island.

On Saturday, October 13th, from 9-11 a.m. volunteers will dig in and begin planting shrubs and trees to increase diversity to the forest. All are welcome. No experience is needed however, registration is required and capacity is limited. All tools, gloves and training will be provided.

Mission Statement

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) engages people to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities region.

Description

Friends of the Mississippi River is proud to work with roughly 3,000 volunteers annually.

We keep volunteering simple, fun and satisfying -- there are no applications, and you can sign up for one event or several. We list events especially in need of volunteers here on VolunteerMatch.com, but maintain a full calendar of 60+ events a year at www.fmr.org/events.

Our project work includes conservation and restoration of natural areas and habitat, education on watershed protection issues, and organizing activities that connect the public to the Mississippi River.
