TITLE: State Advocacy Assistant
SCHEDULE: Flexible, Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
DESCRIPTION: YWCA Dayton, dedicated to the empowerment of women and the elimination of racism, seeks a highly motivated undergraduate or graduate student with an interest and passion in public policy and political science, particularly in areas concerning women’s rights, racial equity and intersections of gender, race and class, for an administrative unpaid intern position. This intern will report directly to the Advocacy & Grants Manager and will also work closely with other YWCA Dayton staff and volunteers. This position is based out of Dayton, Ohio.
DUTIES:
The Council of Ohio YWCA’s was conceived in 1965 and brought to fruition in 1967 with the purpose of thinking creatively about how the Ohio Associations might draw strength from each other and be more effective. Today there are fourteen (14) associations, including YWCA Dayton, that comprise the Ohio Council of YWCA’s. The objectives stated in the bylaws include, but are not limited to:
- Acting as a resource for Ohio YWCA associations to strengthen interest and action in areas of public policy at the state and national levels by providing legislative information and by coordinating local association efforts.
- Developing working relationships with organizations within the state that have similar objectives.
- Identifying and developing statewide sources of funding for YWCA advocacy efforts, as well as other programs, services, and activities.
The Ohio Council’s advocacy agenda consists of four focus areas: racial justice and civil rights, affordable housing, violence against women, and child and family development.
The state advocacy intern will be responsible for working with YWCA staff and contracted lobbyists to effectuate the above activities:
SKILL SET:
Strong written and verbal skills, with the ability to make public presentations and to communicate clearly and effectively with the public.
Ability to communicate with people of varying social, economic, religious and ethnic backgrounds.
Ability to interact with others both individually and as a team in order to cultivate support for the agency mission.
Ability to work independently and with agility to meet organizational needs.
EDUCATION:
Current undergraduate or graduate student.
