The mission of Traditions Health Hospice Newport News, formerly known as Hospice Community Care, is to promote health and independence in the patients we serve, to attract and retain exceptional healthcare professionals and to conduct our business with compassion and integrity.

Many of our patients live in assisted living facilities or nursing homes and have had to re-home their dog for a variety of reasons. Other patients' dogs have passed away and there is no dog available to visit these patients. No other companionship can compare to that of a dog, who loves unconditionally with an uncanny ability to see past a patient's sickness to bring joy to the patient, if only for one or two visits a month.

Do you have a certified therapy dog? Would you like to see your dog bring joy to people who would happily accept a visit with a loving dog? Traditions Health has a need for certified therapy dogs to visit our patients in York County, James City County, or the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg or Virginia Beach. All volunteer therapy dog will need to be current on all shots and license and you will need to provide proof that your dog is a certified therapy animal. As the dog's handler, you will need to have a TB test that we provide, have a current driver's license, auto insurance and a clean driving record. You will also need to undergo hospice volunteer training at our Newport News office.

During your training, you will learn about Covid-19, mask wearing and social distancing. As a Pet Therapy Volunteer, you will be required to observe all Covid-19 protocols as pertains to your patient.

Does this volunteer opportunity sound appealing to you? Please call Cynthia Vereen-Anderson, Volunteer Coordinator at 804-290-0951. You can also send an email to cynthia.anderson@traditionshealth.com.
