Hospice Community Care - Richmond & Tri-Cities, The Peninsula, Middle Peninsula and Hampton Roads

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 6 people are interested

The mission of Traditions Health Newport News, d.b.a. Hospice Community Care, is to provide dignified end-of-life care and quality services that allow our patients and their families and/or significant other to live life richly, deeply and meaningfully for as long as it may last and to die with dignity in the setting of their choice.

Many of our patients live in assisted living facilities or nursing homes and have had to re-home their dog. Other patients' dogs have passed away and there is no dog available to visit these patients. No other companionship can compare to that of a dog, who loves unconditionally with an uncanny ability to see past a patient's sickness to bring joy to the patient, if only for one or two visits a month.

Do you have a certified therapy dog? Would you like to see your dog bring joy to people who would happily accept a visit with a loving dog? Hospice Community Care has a need for certified therapy dogs to visit our patients in York County, James City County, and the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and Williamsburg. All of our volunteer therapy dog will need to be current on all shots and you will need to provide proof that your dog is a certified therapy animal. As the dog's handler, you will need to have a TB test that we provide, have a current driver's license, auto insurance and a clean driving record. You will also need to undergo hospice volunteer training at our Newport News office.

During your training, you will learn about Covid-19, mask wearing and social distancing. As a Pet Therapy Volunteer, you will be required to observe all Covid-19 protocols as pertaining to your assigned patient.

Does this volunteer opportunity sound appealing to you? Please call Cynthia Vereen-Anderson, Volunteer Coordinator at 804-290-0951. You can also send an email to cynthia.anderson@traditionshealth.com.
