Description

Peru is extremely biologically diverse, which is why it is also the perfect market for illegal trafficking. It is very common for female monkeys to be killed for human consumption and for their babies to be sold on the black market to become pets. This concerns various species of monkeys as well as parrots and macaws. When taken away from their natural habitat, the animals are carried in small cages which causes stress and injuries. Animal trafficking is deeply affecting the biodiversity of the rainforest to the point that some species are now endangered...

The NGO AMAZON SHELTER, for Animal and Environmental Protection was created in 2007 by Magali Salinas, an animal lover, in order to rescue and rehabilitate as many animals as possible. We work for the conservation of the environment and Peruvian Amazon wildlife through environmental education, in order to achieve a change in behavior in human activities and thus stop this deterioration.

Many of the animals at the centre are rescued from the illegal trafficking and pet trade or abusive homes, and often arrive injured or stressed. We rescue and rehabilitate various species of monkeys such as howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, dusky monkeys, but also macaws, peccaries, tortoises etc. in order to release them into their natural habitat.
