ORGANIZATION: Amherst H. Wilder Foundation

Purpose: Promote knowledge and understanding of the cultural history, traditions and experiences of youth in Youth Leadership Initiative, a Community Leadership Program at the Wilder Foundation. Foster their exploration of how their culture affects them and their lives through mixed media, reading, creative writing and film.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide leadership, guidance and perspective for a group of youth from a cultural background similar to the cultural coach (i.e. race, ethnicity, religion, gender and sexuality)
  • Facilitate discussions and activities that enhance awareness of ancestry, heritage allows youth to discover and share their experiences, struggles and pride as members of that cultural group which the Cultural Coach will be able to relate and guide discussions through shared experience.
  • Prepare youth to communicate effectively about their culture with others
  • Provide youth with information and perspective about the culture, in a manner reflective of cross-cultural respect and inclusion
  • Support youth in research that explores their culture
  • Encourage youth to talk to their families to gain information about their beliefs and traditions
  • Guide youth in developing effective communication and support the preparation of a presentation of their culture to other cultural groups

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in a language as spoken by our community (Somali, Oromo, Spanish Hmong or Karen)
  • At least 2 years of experience in Youth Work and facilitation
