Special Olympics Santa Barbara is excited to present our 6th Annual Soccer School Games which has been named after one of our highly valued Coaches, Steve Friesen who passed away last year. This years competition will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at Girsh Park. This event provides local special education students the opportunity to compete in a soccer tournament against their peers from other schools, providing the only "inter-school" competition for children with intellectual disabilities. For many it is the first time and is a great honor for these students to be able to represent their school by competing in a soccer competition.

This event will host students from 20 local elementary, middle and high school programs the opportunity to compete, and be included in a community athletic competition. We partner with Special Education Directors, APE Teachers, and class room teachers who train over 250 athletes to play soccer for the 2-3 months prior to School Games competition. The competition includes 4 fields of play, a wheelchair soccer competition (called Hoccer) which is played with a large inflatable soccer ball, a skills exhibition in dribbling, passing and kicking and this year for the first time, we will provide Flag Football and Bocce exhibitions for these athletes to participate in.

We are encouraging families and individual volunteers to come participate in this magical day. The minimum age range to volunteer is 8-13 accompanied by a parent or adult. 14 and over may participate unaccompanied. The volunteer opportunities we will need support in are:

Scorekeepers/Timers, Soccer Skills Exhibition Support, Wheelchair Soccer (Hoccer) Support, Score Reporting & Awards, Medical/First Aid, Lunch Distribution, Photographer, Information Booth Support, Office Equipment Load Out, Tournament Set Up, Tournament Breakdown, School and Volunteer Check In, and Classroom & Bus Escorts. We will also need support for our Flag Football Exhibition and Bocce Exhibit as well.
