Union Settlement - Senior Services is seeking a volunteer to facilitate a Beginner ESL class to improve members Basic English skills. The participants of this class will be senior citizens whose native language is Spanish. We would like a volunteer to come in once or twice a week for about an hour or two, although days and hours are based on volunteer’s flexibility. The volunteer must be available during normal business hours Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am to 4pm.
Responsibilities
Experience teaching is preferred.
Must be able to plan and create program agenda
Preparation of handouts and lesson plans
Volunteer must be reliable, and dedicated to the position.
Must be comfortable teaching and working with senior citizens. Group of about 5-10 seniors
Requirements
Volunteer must have good communication skills. We are looking for someone to be creative, and open minded. A person that can have patience, energy, and problem solving skills to help seniors learn English.

Description
Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
