Days of Caring was established 26 years ago as the single largest day of volunteerism in Thurston County to increase awareness of human service organizations and demonstrate how people working together for the common good helps accomplish great things.

"United Way of Thurston County fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community. And we take that fight to many fronts. Day of Caring is just one of those, and it provides an opportunity for hundreds of supporters from our workplace campaigns, individual and corporate donors, and the community to join with us and enhance their philanthropy through volunteerism. We’ll tackle numerous projects for nonprofits throughout the community, and bring the muscle to get them done," said Chris Wells, Executive Director of United Way of Thurston County.

Mission Statement

Serve Your Community. Start Your Career. Join the Greater South Sound VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) Team.

Description

Greater South Sound VISTAs serve in the offices of our region’s public and nonprofit agencies, guided by the four Key Principles of VISTA Service: End Poverty, Build Capacity, Empower Communities, and Create Sustainable Solutions. Our Host Sites (the agencies hosting VISTAs) are spread across the Greater South Sound region, not only in Thurston County but also in Pierce, Thurston, Grays Harbor, Mason, Lewis, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties.

We’re looking for applicants of all ages, from all backgrounds, who are passionate about social justice and economic equity, self motivated, and team oriented. With VISTA, you choose where you submit your application - select the Host Sites that you’re the most passionate about. Each Host Site creates an individualized VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) to plan out the VISTA’s upcoming Year of Service, so each VISTA position is unique. Some VADs involve being out in the community regularly, whereas others might involve a lot of time in the office analyzing data or designing a website. Sample responsibilities listed in recent VADs include: developing trainings for food bank volunteers, revising policies for a shelter, creating a public awareness campaign to prevent human trafficking, writing grants for a free childcare program, and more.
