ORGANIZATION

Partnerships for Trauma Recovery (PTR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses including war, torture, forced displacement, human trafficking and persecution due to identity and beliefs. At our Bay Area-based Mosaic Healing Center, we: (a) Provide culturally aware, trauma-informed and linguistically accessible mental health care for refugees, asylees, asylum seekers and human trafficking survivors, (b) Expand clinical capacity to serve these populations, and (c) Advocate for policies to prevent trauma and re-traumatization. With combined expertise gained through over twenty years of providing clinical services to survivors of war trauma, torture and persecution, and in-depth experience implementing international human rights programming, our team integrates the fields of global mental health and human rights to expand the range - and increase the depth - of psychosocial support for this highly vulnerable population.

POSITION

This is an exciting opportunity to join a nonprofit organization working at the nexus of human rights and global mental health. PTR is currently in the midst of a planning process to scale both our advocacy and training programs. The goal of expanding PTR’s advocacy programs is to provide opportunities for clinicians, survivors of human rights abuses, and other activists to engage in advancing human rights for forcibly displaced individuals, through a trauma-informed lens. This position will work closely with the Executive Director to conduct a field survey of other organizations conducting advocacy efforts related to refugees, asylees, and other international survivors of human rights abuses. This field survey will assist PTR in avoiding duplicating other efforts, and in better planning for expanding our advocacy programs.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities of the Advocacy Research Intern include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identify non-profit, government, and private institutions working on behalf of refugees or other international populations who are also conducting advocacy efforts.
  • Conduct research both through web searches and by holding key informant interviews with staff members at other organizations that are conducting advocacy efforts.
  • Identify the goals of other organizations’ advocacy efforts, as well as scope, audience, approach, and other relevant variables.
  • Make recommendations to PTR for coalitions or collective efforts to join.
  • Deliverable: a guide of organizations conducting advocacy efforts, and summary of key findings, to be provided in written form, as well as during a formal presentation to key stakeholders at PTR.
