Event Description:
Join us in rescuing the native habitat by removing invasive plant species at Dorothea Dix Park.

Impact: Invasive plants out compete our native species which our animals depend upon for food.

Volunteer Duties: Possibly using hand tools such as loppers, pruners, or hand saws (18 years of age) to cut down invasive plants and dragging them to be stacked for removal.

Volunteer Sifts: There are multiple days to choose from. see below:

9/22/18 - 9am - 12pm - full
9/29/18 - 9 am - 12 pm
10/10/18 - 12 pm - 3 pm - full
10/24/18 - 9 am - 12 pm
11/3/18 - 1 pm - 4 pm
11/7/18 - 9 am - 12 pm

Special Information: Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes such as hiking/work boots or sneakers, and clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Please dress for the weather. Staff will provide gloves, tools and first aid kit with sunscreen and insect repellent.

Work Environment: We will be working outside in the elements. We will be working on uneven ground as we cut and remove the invasive plants in wooded areas of the park. There is a restroom on site. There is opportunity to not use the tools and to help stack as well.

Volunteer Requirements: Pre-registration is required. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to volunteer. Everyone who volunteers must sign a release form. If anyone is under the age of 18, then a parent or guardian must sign their form as well.

Group Registration Information: Registration as a volunteer is first come, first served. A group leader must email mary.owens@raleighnc.gov to register. All groups will be required to provide a list of names and emails for their volunteers.

This project is rain or shine, unless cancelled by the City of Raleigh.

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
