We are also looking for VIGIL VOLUNTEERS who sit with and comfort an actively dying patient. The same requirements as above are necessary. Volunteers are desired on an AS NEEDED basis.
What is a Vigil Volunteer?
- They are a specially trained group who volunteers to sit with people who have hours to live.
- All Vigil Volunteers are specifically called to go wherever people are dying (i.e nursing homes, ALF's PCH, memory care units, and private homes).
- Travel is involved.
- Medical experience is not required.
- You must be 18 years or older (both men and women are welcome).
Sometimes patients are conscious, but oftentimes the patients are unable to communicate. We have vigil volunteers because we do not want any of our patients to ever have to leave this world alone. Many times hospice patients have no family, many are out of state and trying to get here, some have said their goodbyes, or they just need added support during the transition of their loved one. Whatever the case may be, we want to be able to give the gift of presence. Music therapy is something we would like to offer so if you play an instrument let me know.
To be considered you must:
- be able to go out on short notice
- sit at least three-hour shifts
- be calm, committed and be comfortable with the dying
We are looking for vigil volunteers to cover the following counties: Cobb, Fulton, Dekalb, Carroll, Gwinnett, North Fulton, and Cherokee. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, let’s talk!
