AVID Tutor Position:

AVID Tutors at Bohannon Middle School work with middle school students in the AVID elective class under the direct supervision of the AVID Teacher.

In the AVID Elective course, AVID students, students who are looking to Advance Via Individual Determination, engage in structured study groups twice per week. During these structured groups, students discuss math and science concepts they are struggling to comprehend. As a group, the students work together to help each other better understand points of confusion. As a facilitator of these groups, you will help students advance their skills in academic discussions, critical thinking, effective communication, Socratic inquiry, collaboration, listening, writing, and reflection.
As an AVID Tutor, you will be facilitating these small study groups that use questioning and collaboration to help students develop answers to their own questions. You will also help students ask questions of one another, take notes, and help find concepts they are struggling with.

Regular attendance is important. Six hours of training is provided initially and ongoing support is available dthroughout the school year. As an AVID Tutor, you will find that being a part of the AVID College Readiness system is highly engaging and rewarding. AVID Tutors contribute to a college-bound culture that can change students' lives by putting them on a path towards college.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled or having graduated from college.
• Growth mindset and high expectations for yourself and the students.
• Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID Teacher for the purpose of providing information regarding student progress and areas of concern.
• Help determine concepts that need to be taught or re-taught be examining student notes and discussion.
