PURPOSE: The Best Buy Teen Tech Center is an after school learning environment where youth can explore their own interests and become confident in the use of technology. Mentors will support youth in completing projects specific to Bresee programs, or assistance with school based homework.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greet students and serve as a point of contact for students with questions, new students, etc.
  • Provide assistance to students who "drop in" into the center seeking help with homework or other projects.
  • Encourage and facilitate students in applying problem solving and planning techniques to projects.
  • Work informally with students both one-and-one and in groups.

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability desired.
  • Mentors are not required to be experts with technology but must be willing to learn!
  • Experience working with high school students in a learning environment preferred.
  • Experience applying analytical and problem-solving skills to homework or projects preferred.
  • Willingness to share positive skills, advice, tips tailored to academic problems for youth.
  • Experience in developing positive, mentor-like relationships with youth preferred.

TRAINING AND SUPPORT: Volunteers will be provided with an orientation to the volunteer position and the Best Buy Teen Tech Center, provided by the Volunteer Manager and/or the Tech Center Coordinator. While specific training for specific programs (i.e. Robotics, STEM, Music, etc) will not be provided, volunteers have the the opportunity to explore and learn new skills at the center as well.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical requirements include standing and sitting during the after school programs from 3:00pm - 6:00pm.


COMMITMENT EXPECTED: Preferred commitment to this volunteer opportunity is 2-3 hours per week on at least one set day each week (i.e., every Monday or every Thursday). Preferred commitment would be for the duration of the fall semester (September - December) or for the entire school year (September - June 2019).
