Mission Statement

MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana is an inclusive contemporary arts space grounded in the Chicano/Latino experience that incubates new visual, literary and performance art in order to engage people in civic dialogue and community transformation.

Description

Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana, Inc. (MACLA) was founded in 1989 with the dual purpose of establishing a Latino cultural center in downtown San Jose and advocating broader participation by multicultural arts in the city of San Jose's rapid urban renewal efforts. In 1992, MACLA opened the doors of the San Jose Center for Latino Arts - the preeminent Latino visual arts space in Silicon Valley. MACLA produces approximately 20 programs a year in three areas: (1)visual arts exhibitions; (2) literary arts and humanities programs; (3) youth arts education. Always looking to challenge assumptions and preconceptions about Latino culture, MACLA is known as a place that fosters new work, creates dialogue, and takes artistic risks. MACLA's desire is to open a conversation among Latinos and non-Latinos alike about the cultural processes by which Latinos are defined and represented in society at large.
